Chapter History

The Des Moines Alumni Chapter was founded on April 29, 1950. One member of this chapter was the much- celebrated architect Archie Alexander. He served as Past Grand Polemarch of the fraternity and was appointed as Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands by President Dwight Eisenhower, where he served from April 1954 to August 1955, it is also important to note he broke the color barrier by being the first African American property owner in the Historic Chautauqua Parkway Neighborhood. Today, the membership is widely diverse in terms of professional fields and special interests. Careers range from military to senior management, educators, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and sales management.

National History

Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on January 5, 1911. Early in that century African American students were actively dissuaded from attending college. Formidable obstacles were erected to prevent the few who were enrolled from assimilating into co-curricular campus life. This ostracism characterized Indiana University in 1911, thus causing Elder Watson Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong along with eight other men to form Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Fashioning achievement as its purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture, patriotism, and honor to the bond of fraternity. Kappa Alpha Psi, a college fraternity, now comprised of functioning Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major college campuses and in cities throughout the world, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision shared commonly by the late revered founder “The Dreamer” Elder Watson Diggs.
